Ihya al Islam - Sunan of Eating

Date: 20th Rabi al Awwal 1442


40 Sunan of Eating:

  1. Halal & Tayyib
  2. Malik bin Anas (ra) noticed Rasulullah (s) liked eating pumpkin.
  3. Wash hands before eating
  4. Eat on ground
  5. Do not recline
  6. Make dua and niyya before eating, such as strength for worship
  7. Be content with what you have
  8. Never criticize food, eat it or don’t
  9. Give others the best of the meal, and do not desire it for yourself 
  10. Try not to eat alone, but invite others
  11. Know who eats first, typically it is the eldest or most knowledgeable, in families it is always the husband/father who eats first
  12. Do not talk about worldly matters while eating, but talk about Allah, Rasulullah (s), and righteous people
  13. When serving or passing something always pass to the right, regardless of age or status
  14.  Do not watch others eat
  15. Do not say anything unpleasant while eating
  16. Recite the Basmallah at beginning
  17. Do not leave until everyone has finished eating
  18. Do not stop eating while others still eat
  19. Stop eating before becoming full
  20. Balance food and drink while eating, one third food, one third drink, one third air
  21. Take small bites
  22. Eat slowly
  23. Do not take another bite until you have finished / swallowed
  24. Chew food thoroughly
  25. Eat from what is closest to yourself
  26. Eat with right hand, three fingers and thumb
  27. Do not blow on hot food or drink, but wait for it to cool
  28. Eat food that has fallen, do not waste
  29. Eat meat off the bone, do not remove it from bone beforehand
  30. Eat odd number of things which can be counted, such as grapes
  31. Drink in threes
  32. Look into glass before drinking
  33. Drinking milk is superior to all food and drink
  34. Learn adhkar after drinking and eating
  35. Lick fingers after eating
  36. Lick plate clean after eating
  37. Wash mouth after, do not spit
  38. Clean teeth after eating, do not eat food bits
  39. Use miswak after eating
  40. Be grateful to whoever served or cooked the food
